Clio Setup Guide

Connect CaseHug to Clio Manage in under 5 minutes. This guide walks you through every step.

Prerequisites

  • An active CaseHug account (Solo, Practice, or Firm plan)
  • A Clio Manage account (Boutique, Corporate, or Elite plan)
  • Firm Admin role in CaseHug
  • Admin access in your Clio account

Setup Steps

1

Navigate to Integration Settings

Log in to your CaseHug dashboard. Click your firm name in the top-right corner, then go to Settings → Integrations. You'll see available integrations listed as cards.

💡 Tips

  • Only firm administrators can manage integrations.
  • If you don't see the Integrations tab, contact your CaseHug administrator.
2

Click "Connect to Clio"

Find the Clio Manage card and click the blue "Connect to Clio" button. CaseHug will redirect you to Clio's secure authorization page.

💡 Tips

  • Make sure you're logged into the correct Clio account before clicking.
  • If you manage multiple Clio accounts, log into the one you want to connect first.
3

Authorize CaseHug in Clio

Clio will show you the permissions CaseHug needs: Matters (read/write), Contacts (read/write), and Documents (read/write). Review the permissions and click "Allow Access".

💡 Tips

  • CaseHug only requests the minimum permissions needed for sync.
  • You can revoke access at any time from Clio's settings or from CaseHug.
4

Verify Connection

After authorizing, you'll be redirected back to CaseHug. The Clio card will now show "Connected" with your Clio account name and email. You'll also see the connection date and auto-sync toggle.

💡 Tips

  • If the connection fails, check that your Clio account has API access enabled.
  • Contact support@calmintake.com if you see an error after authorizing.
5

Configure Field Mappings

Scroll down to the "Case Type Mappings" section. CaseHug maps its practice areas to Clio practice areas automatically, but you can customize these. For example, map CaseHug's "Divorce — Standard" to your firm's specific Clio practice area.

💡 Tips

  • Default mappings work for most firms — only customize if your Clio practice areas have non-standard names.
  • Changes are saved immediately when you select a new mapping.
6

Enable Auto-Sync

Toggle "Auto-sync on approval" to ON. When enabled, completed intakes are automatically pushed to Clio when documents are approved — creating the contact, matter, and uploading all documents. You can also toggle "Auto-sync on matter created" to push immediately when a new matter is created.

💡 Tips

  • Start with auto-sync disabled and do a few manual syncs to verify data looks correct in Clio.
  • You can always trigger a manual sync from any matter's detail page.
7

Test with a Manual Sync

Open any existing matter in CaseHug. Click the "Sync to Clio" button in the matter actions. Verify in Clio that the contact, matter, and documents all appear correctly. Check that the practice area mapping is correct.

💡 Tips

  • Use a test matter first to verify everything works.
  • Check Clio's matter list and contact list after syncing.
  • If documents don't appear immediately, wait 30 seconds — Clio processes uploads asynchronously.

Troubleshooting

"Clio integration is not configured" error

Your CaseHug instance doesn't have Clio API credentials set. Contact support@calmintake.com.

OAuth redirect fails or shows a blank page

Clear your browser cookies for app.clio.com, then try connecting again. Ensure pop-up blockers aren't interfering.

Connection shows as inactive after a few days

CaseHug automatically refreshes Clio tokens. If you see an inactive connection, disconnect and reconnect.

Documents don't appear in Clio after sync

Clio processes document uploads asynchronously. Wait up to 60 seconds, then refresh the Clio matter. If still missing, check the sync log in CaseHug Settings → Integrations.

Practice area mapping is wrong in Clio

Go to Settings → Integrations → Case Type Mappings and update the mapping for that case type. Future syncs will use the new mapping.

Duplicate contacts created in Clio

CaseHug matches by email address. If the client email differs between CaseHug and Clio, a new contact may be created. Merge duplicates in Clio.
